The Father

'The Father' by August Strindberg
Speculative design for The Royal Court

‘One believes and one is saved... but I know that a man’s beliefs can destroy him’

Bringing out the themes of patriarchy, female servitude, status and the thin line between sanity and madness by placing the design in an Industrial revolution-era Glasgow and using a modernist Mackintosh lab aesthetic in conflict with a Scottish chapel. This was my first project on the MA and my first foray into the brilliant world of model-making. Above are a selection of images, in a slideshow you can click through, of the white-card, final set-model and the costume designs.
